We know something is wrong, yet we continue doing our normal routines, thinking it will get better in time. We fool ourselves into believing if we could just hold our breath long enough, the waters will recede. The problem is, when storms stop, and the water recedes, we believe we were successful, when in fact, it was just the end of the storm.  We did nothing to affect the storm. We did not become more resilient. So when the next rain shower comes, and it will, it won't take as much water to overtake us. If we're living on the hope of riding out every storm, while doing nothing different, we will eventually find ourselves under water.
Trying to control everything
For some of us, it's like the dam is breaking and we need every finger and toe to plug all the holes because we're afraid the entire levee is about to break loose. When the pressure starts to build we use insufficient substitutions. These unhealthy strategies, such as alcohol, television, or even pseudo-healthy ways such as excessive exercise, or pouring ourselves into our career can all have the same outcome: distraction and disconnection. We do all this believing it is helping, when in actuality, we're neglecting ourselves. No matter how we try to plug the holes, if it's not wholistic, we'll never be able to stop the breaking of the dam.
